Ophthalmology is full of biomaterials. Our group is dedicated to improving implants and biomaterials in the field of vitreoretinal surgery. More specifically, we work on improving intraoperative heavy liquids, long term endotamponades and postoperative extended drug release systems. This junior research group led by Dr. Maximilian Hammer → is part of the David J Apple Laboratory for Vision Research and is mentored and guided by Prof. Auffarth.

About

Dr. Hammer is an ophthalmology resident and graduate of the MD/PhD-Program of the Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg. After conducting research in the field of neuroscience (Prof. Draguhn, Heidelberg University) and research stays at BIDMC/ Harvard Medical School (Prof. Eikermann) and at the University of Oxford (Prof. Issa / Dr. Xue), he joined the Apple Laboratory in 2020.

He founded the Posterior Segment Apple junior research group together with his mentors Prof. Auffarth and Prof. Uhl (IPMB, Heidelberg University) in April 2024.
